The watchful man

I have a friend who quite often loses control when he is drunk and becomes completely paralytic. Usually when this happens somebody takes him home and make sure he gets to bed ok. One night however he went off and nobody knew where he had gone. The next morning there was no sign of him – he wasn’t in his flat.

He returned later that day and recounted what had happened to him. He had woken up that day on a sofa in a flat that he didn’t recognize. Once he had fully opened his eyes and looked around he made out the figure of a man sitting still in a chair in the corner of the dark room. Disturbingly the man was staring in his direction.

The man told my friend that he had found him lying unconscious on the pavement under a bridge. He had put my friend in his car and taken him back to his flat.

My friend did not seem to want to talk about what had happened. It was suggested that this man could easily have taken advantage of my friend. My friend did not like this thought one bit. He was so drunk he wouldn’t even know if something did happen and it was obvious he was scared this might have been the case. We didn’t mention the incident to him again. He was really hungover and he didn’t need the extra concern and worry that something untoward may have taken place.

My thoughts are the following: My friend had his wallet, mobile phone and identification with him. Could the man not have rang somebody on his phone list to find out where he lived? Could the man not have taken him to the police station? Could my friend really not talk at all - was he so drunk he couldn’t tell the man where he lived? Might just have been a nice guy though.
